I'm a self-taught contemporary artist based in Charlotte, NC. I started painting in 2020, during the shutdown, with no formal training and a few supplies from Michaels. I haven't stopped since.
More About Jamie Conner
My work — abstract and figurative pieces in acrylic and mixed media — explores the body as a carrier of memory: personal, inherited, and collective. Some paintings sit inside a single woman's emotional interior: reclamation, rest, the quiet after years of giving herself to everyone else. Others reach further back, into heritage and legacy that live in the body before language does. Running through both is an ongoing theme I call dark femininity — the mysterious, pensive, otherworldly dimensions of womanhood that don't get painted often enough. Alongside this, I work from live model sessions, pushing observed form toward abstraction — the body as architecture as much as feeling.
In 2021, I was awarded a National Endowment for the Arts residency through Indie Grits Labs and Columbia Film Society, where I led community painting sessions and mentored a community member in launching her own art-based business. My first solo show, in Columbia, SC in 2023, sold out within days of opening. In 2026, my work was selected into the inaugural cohort of the McColl Collective, a Charlotte-based critique and exhibition community for contemporary artists.
I paint from Charlotte, NC, where I live with my family. This gallery holds the newest of that work — original, one-of-a-kind pieces on paper and canvas, made slowly, one at a time.
